CASEY KAUFHOLD WINS GT OPEN IN SHOOT-OFF AT AGE 14

Two finals at the season-opening tournament came down to a tiebreak.
Fourteen-year-old Casey Kaufhold converted her cadet world record and top-seeded qualifying round into the recurve women’s individual title at the GT Open in Luxembourg, the first stage of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series.

Kaufhold levelled her final with second seed Gabriela Bayardo in the fifth set, before delivering a 10 in the tiebreak to beat her opponent’s nine and secure the victory.

“Coming into the competition, I knew that I had the skill to come here and do well. I just applied everything that I knew form-wise and mental-wise to the competition and it ended up with a good outcome,” said Casey.

“It feels really good. I am very happy and proud that I could win this for my country, my team and my family.”

Domagoj Buden won the compound men’s competition, also in a shoot-off.



He led Stephan Hansen by a point for most of the match but said, after recently changing to a back tension release aid, he found the pace of the alternate shooting in the final challenging.

“I didn’t have enough time to calm down. I didn’t have enough time to relax for the shot,” he explained. “I made a bad shot [in the last end] and just tried to make it to the shoot-off – and make a great shot in the shoot-off.”

Buden’s tiebreak arrow was an inside-out 10 and enough to beat Hansen, whose arrow was a 10 but clearly further from the middle.

The world’s number two-ranked recurve man, Steve Wijler, and Toja Ellison were the other two winners at the GT Open.

Ellison dispatched Viktoria Balzhanova, 145-143, in the compound women’s final.

Wijler shot three perfect sets in a 7-1 win over Tom Hall.

“I’m really happy to win because every one I win is just another thing off my bucket list,” said Steve.

CRISPIN DUENAS BEATS BRADY ELLISON IN ROME WITH NINE PERFECT 10S

Duenas, Kim, Ruiz and Gellenthien won individual titles in Rome. Canadian Olympian Crispin Duenas shot nine perfect arrows to beat three-time Olympic medallist Brady Ellison to the recurve men’s title at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy, the third event of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series. “I had to work hard in my first matches. Then, everything lined up as it should and I won this great gold medal,” said Duenas. “I’m really happy with my performance and I will surely be back next year.” The pair had tied on 593 points to lead qualification and progressed through opposite ends of the bracket to meet in the final. Ellison was landing left in the match, scoring sets of 28, 29 and 29 points – which were quickly trumped by Duenas’ trio of 30s as the Canadian archer took the match, 6-0.

FAITH MILLER PUTS POINT ON COMPOUND JUNIOR WORLD RECORD IN ROME

A record has been set at all three Indoor Archery World Series events held so far. Faith Miller scored 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round to beat the compound junior women’s world record by a point at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy, the third event of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series. “I did not realise that I could beat the world record. I still don’t believe it. I didn’t expect it at all,” said Faith. “It’s incredible. I did not imagine I would shoot so well.” The previous record of 593 points had stood for 12 years after being set by Erika Jones in 2006. The Roma Archery Trophy is Faith’s first international event. She has previously competed at major USA Archery tournaments and was named a cadet member of the USA Archery Team in 2019 for the first time.
