Image
Prieels, Gellenthien, Kaufhold and Wijler all took top seeds. Sarah Prieels scored 595 out of a possible 600 points to match the 18-metre 60-arrow ranking round world record and lead compound women’s qualification at the opening event of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series in Strassen, Luxembourg. Braden Gellenthien, new cadet world record holder Casey Kaufhold, and Steve Wijler – who tied on points with Cedric Rieger – also took top seedings. “Obviously, I’ll be a little frustrated. You’re never really happy unless it’s a perfect score,” said Prieels. “I’m quite happy about it, being the first big shoot of the season and dropping only five points. Hopefully it’s going to be a good start and I’ll have another shot at breaking the world record soon.” The 595-point compound women’s world record was set by Erika Jones in 2014. Braden Gellenthien dropped just three points to finish ahead of a talented compound men’s field. The world number three was one up on Dutch pair Peter...

FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD CASEY KAUFHOLD SETS CADET WORLD RECORD AT GT OPEN

The score was shot during the first session of the Indoor Archery World Series season. The USA’s Casey Kaufhold, 14, scored 589 out of a possible 600 points during the first qualification session at the GT Open, the first tournament on the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series calendar, to set a new recurve cadet women’s world record. She beat the previous mark, set by Italy’s Tatiana Andreoli in early 2016, by a point. “It feels really good because I knew I could do it in practice so it feels great to transfer it over to competition, any competition, but this big competition especially,” said Kaufhold, who is competing at her first senior international event in Luxembourg. “I feel ready [to compete on the senior stage], I feel mature enough, and I can handle the pressure and shoot well under these circumstances.” At the end of the first day at the GT Open, Kaufhold’s score led the recurve field. A further two sessions of qualifying take place on Saturday 24 November, followed ...

FAITH MILLER PUTS POINT ON COMPOUND JUNIOR WORLD RECORD IN ROME

Image
A record has been set at all three Indoor Archery World Series events held so far. Faith Miller scored 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round to beat the compound junior women’s world record by a point at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy, the third event of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series. “I did not realise that I could beat the world record. I still don’t believe it. I didn’t expect it at all,” said Faith. “It’s incredible. I did not imagine I would shoot so well.” The previous record of 593 points had stood for 12 years after being set by Erika Jones in 2006. The Roma Archery Trophy is Faith’s first international event. She has previously competed at major USA Archery tournaments and was named a cadet member of the USA Archery Team in 2019 for the first time. A world record has been set at all three stages of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series so far. Miller’s joins Casey Kaufhold, who set a recurve junior women’s record at the GT ...

Bayardo (345) and Ruiz (500) are clear leaders in the recurve women’s and compound women’s lists, respectively. Mike Schloesser, who finished the Roma Trophy in ninth, retained the top spot in the compound men’s ranking with 330 points, 20 ahead of Domagoj Buden. The new open ranking, which lists all participants based on their best-combined ranking round scores is led by Thomas Aubert (1677), Bayardo (1738), Schloesser (1792) and Sarah Prieels (1180). The 2019 Indoor Archery World Series continues with the Nimes Tournament on 18-20 January 2019. The Roma Archery Trophy is the third stage of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series.

CRISPIN DUENAS BEATS BRADY ELLISON IN ROME WITH NINE PERFECT 10S

Duenas, Kim, Ruiz and Gellenthien won individual titles in Rome. Canadian Olympian Crispin Duenas shot nine perfect arrows to beat three-time Olympic medallist Brady Ellison to the recurve men’s title at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy, the third event of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series. “I had to work hard in my first matches. Then, everything lined up as it should and I won this great gold medal,” said Duenas. “I’m really happy with my performance and I will surely be back next year.” The pair had tied on 593 points to lead qualification and progressed through opposite ends of the bracket to meet in the final. Ellison was landing left in the match, scoring sets of 28, 29 and 29 points – which were quickly trumped by Duenas’ trio of 30s as the Canadian archer took the match, 6-0.

CLARIFICATION OF TIEBREAK RULES FOR INDOOR MATCHPLAY COMPETITION

Image
The single-arrow shoot-off is still used indoors. Following some confusion over the rules regarding tiebreaks at indoor archery tournaments, World Archery has issued the following clarification: “The decision made by World Archery’s board in 2017 and that came into effect on 1 April 2018 to add a second shoot-off if both recurve archers shoot a 10 or both compound archers shoot an X10 only applies to outdoor events.” “Indoor competitions are still run using the single-arrow, closest-to-the-middle tiebreak. The only reason for a second tiebreak to take place is if a judge cannot discern a difference between the two arrows’ distance from the centre after measurement.” The indoor single-arrow shoot-off relates to rule 14.5.2.2 in book three of World Archery’s Constitution and Rulebook.

Cinzia Noziglia

Cinzia Noziglia, a multiple world champion who won the World Games in Wroclaw in 2017, took the barebow women’s title. “It's been a great time for barebow in indoor competitions, considering it's not usually included in the most important events. I felt so happy for sharing the experience of shooting with so many champions,” said Noziglia, also from Italy. Spain’s David Garcia Fernandez won the barebow men’s event. After three events of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series, there’s a three-way tie in the recurve men’s elite ranking lead between Duenas, Steve Wijler and Oh Jin Hyek on 250 points.
